Many patients ask why would I need implants to help my sagging breasts?

Breasts that sag considerably often require a combination of breast augmentation combined with a breast lift (mastoplexy). These procedures can often be accomplished simultaneously. A breast lift raises and firms breasts through a combination of reshaping and tightening of tissue, and removal of excess skin. The breast implant adds the fullness and enhances the shape of your breasts.

Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation with a Lift?

Healthy women who have excess skin, or breast sagging with small breasts, are good candidates for the breast augmentation with lift procedure. Commonly known as breast implants, and known even more colloquially as the “boob job,” this procedure offers more to women than just enlarging their breasts. Breast implants increase the volume of the breasts, it’s true. But then, the lift helps to remove the excess skin and reshape the breasts. This skin removal and reshaping of the breasts is integral to the breast augmentation process.

Common Breast Concerns:

When you feel your breasts are not proportional to your body.
Not liking the look of your breasts because of lost shape and/or fullness due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.
Unhappy with the inconsistent size / shape resulting from abnormal natural development, mastectomy, or injury.
Uncomfortable with the fit or look of your bust line in clothing/bathing suits or bras.

Which is Better, Silicone Breast Implants or Saline?

Silicone has the advantage over saline for a more natural feel and less visible rippling. The cost for silicone breast augmentation is higher, however, Dr. Yang is available to help you decide which option may be right for you during your consultation.

How is Breast Augmentation Combined with a Breast Lift Performed? What Are The Risks?

A breast implant is placed behind the pectoralis muscle. The incision is placed in the breast fold. Once the breast implants are placed, the breast lift is performed. Dissolving sutures are used. Typically, there is no need for a drainage tube.

The procedure typically takes 2–3 hours and is performed in a fully licensed outpatient cosmetic surgery center. Most patients require a week off of work to recover. Sometimes women take a longer period off work if the work is strenuous. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing. It will take a month before you can resume any exercise.

Recovery and Aftercare

Follow-up visits are included in the procedure and will be arranged at the Rockville, Maryland or Tysons Corner, McLean, Virginia both locations near Washington DC.
Following the plastic surgery procedure, breast enhancement patients should expect some post-operation effects and should follow specific instructions as described below.

Patients may experience some degree of bruising and swelling. The first two days are usually the most uncomfortable. Pain medication will be prescribed for this. An antibiotic and an anti-nausea medication are also prescribed.
Limit activity for the week following surgery.
Avoid strenuous activities for about one month.
Patients can typically return to work after the first week.
A surgical bra should be worn for the first two weeks following surgery.
Some constipation is common when taking pain medications. Added fruit, fiber, and stool softeners are recommended before and after surgery.

Insurance Guidelines

In Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC, breast augmentation with a breast lift is usually not considered medical – a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not covered by insurance. An exception is when the indication for surgery was due to breast reconstruction or reduction causing back issues due to heaviness of large breasts. Call us for more information.
